![]() ![]() Remember the tree buds back everywhere so build the height and trunk first and concentrate on branches in a few years. I would grow the tree as fast as possible to a much larger size - either in the ground or in large pots - feed hard and minimal pruning. The twigs that support the leaves are thicker than normal too - more reason for a large tree and not a little one. They bud back really well and respond to hard pruning but are very slow growers so take a long time to make into a good bonsai - but they are an unusual bonsai so well worth the effort.Īs the leaves stay large the final tree needs to be large for it to look right - 24"+ finished height can just about balance the leaves - not a shohin tree !Īs it grows slowly you dont want to cut anything off yet or you are setting the project back years. This thinning is the opposite of other acers - you must remove the 'under leaves' and keep the outer ones otherwise the tree does not grow any more that year. It makes very dense growth with multiple layers of leaves within millimeters of each other, so needs heavy thinning in the upper and outer sections or the tree looses all inner ramification. the tree makes very short annual extension and is very top dominant. ![]() Mikawa will retain large leaves all the time - even after total defoliation the leaves regrow the same size. We recommend that you buy the Japanese maples you want immediately as we often sell out of certain selections.I purchased a Mikawa a few years ago and here is some information I found and saved about this cultivar. Limited Quantities Available !! As we have over a thousand cultivars of Japanese maples, we often do not have many of each cultivar. Small 1 gallon Seedlings From Mikawa yatsubusa are about 3-4 years old. This is one plant you will grow to love more and more in your garden. These miniature and compact seedlings are great for fairy gardens, conifer troughs, miniature railroad gardens, patio containers, bonsai, and small spaces in the garden. I expect these seedlings to be very hardy handling sun in most situations in Zones 5-8, needing only slight protection from the hot afternoon sun in Zone 9. These seedlings from Mikawa yatsubsa are extremely beautiful and should give you a great fall color that I would expect to be orange to red. This variation happens across the seedlings, however we have no way of knowing which seedlings have this spring color. All these Mikawa yatsubusa seedlings have very similar leaves and a tight dense growth habit that are quite dwarf overall. This is a unique offering of chance seedlings from Mikawa yatsubusa. Many of these may be greener right now, but should have great spring color every year. We picked out our favorite few for continued evaluation and are releasing the rest as we don’t have room to keep looking through so many red and orange Mikawa yatsubusa seedlings. These displayed colors from chocolate red to orange to bright red. These seedlings showed good spring color and were evaluated rigorously through our selection process in the Area 51 collection. Spring Color Rare Not Grafted Dwarf Japanese Maple Tree Zones 5-9 Excellent for Bonsai **All of these seedlings are different from previous offerings.
